Frequently Asked Questions
When exactly does the game end if Age III ends during different players' turns?
If Age III ends during the starting player's turn, that is the last round and the game ends immediately. If Age III ends during any other player's turn, there is one more complete round after that, ensuring all players get equal turns.
What happens to cards and leaders when an age ends and cards become antiquated?
When a new age begins, cards from ages older than the one that just ended become antiquated (but not cards from the age that just ended). Players must discard all antiquated cards from their hands, and all antiquated leaders are removed from play. Antiquated unfinished wonders are also removed.
How many cards are discarded from the leftmost spaces when replenishing the card row?
The number depends on remaining players in the game: discard the first 3 spaces in a 2-player game, first 2 spaces in a 3-player game, and only the leftmost space in a 4-player game. If someone has resigned, count only remaining players, not the initial number.
Do I start with military actions available on my first turn?
No, players have no military actions available on their first turn. All red tokens remain beside player boards initially, while civil actions (white tokens) are placed on the Despotism card based on turn order.
How are the initial civil actions distributed among players?
The starting player begins with 1 civil action (1 white token on Despotism). In clockwise order, each subsequent player gets one more civil action than the previous player, so they start with 2, 3, or 4 white tokens respectively.
What cards need to be removed for 2-player and 3-player games?
For 3-player games, remove cards marked 'Republic 4' from civil decks I, II, and III. For 2-player games, remove cards marked 'Monarchy 3+' and 'Republic 4' from these decks, plus all pact cards from military decks I, II, and III.
When does Age A end and what's special about it?
Age A ends when the card row is replenished for the first time, which occurs on the starting player's second turn. After dealing remaining Age A cards, remove the rest of the Age A deck from the game and replace it with shuffled Age I decks.
What happens during final scoring at the end of the game?
All Age III events in both the current and next events decks are evaluated in any order. Any end-of-game bonuses (like the Bill Gates card) are scored. The player with the most culture points wins, with tied players sharing victory.
